AET Transport and Mobility Forum: Webinar 03 February 2022

Webinar: Thursday 3 February 2022

11.00 - 12.00 CET (10.00 - 11.00 GMT/WET)

Increasing the sustainability of freight transport

This FREE webinar is organised as the fourth event of the AET Transport and Mobility Forum (previously AET Covid-19 Conversations) and will be chaired by Thierry Vanelslander, Professor in the Department of Transport and Regional Economics at the University of Antwerp and Chair of the European Transport Conference Freight and Logistics Programme Committee. It will focus on two aspects of increasing the sustainability of freight transport:

Shared e-fleets for communal services - a way to reducing urban transport emissions. Dr. Verena Ehrler - researcher at the University Gustave Eiffel, FR and a lecturer at the Wildau Institute of Technology, DE:

  • Cities are under growing pressure to reduce transport related emissions, in order to reach air pollution as well as climate targets. Shifting municipal fleets to electric vehicles is one approach that can contribute to such an emission reduction. In a project carried out in Berlin, municipal services - water supply management, waste management and public transport services - pilot shared electric vehicles for their service units. The presentation maps out how such shared fleets can contribute to greening urban transport.

Freight modal shift: economically feasible and environmentally beneficial? Axel Merkel and Inge Vierth - Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI), SE:

  • Modal shift of freight from road to more energy-efficient modes of transport is seen as a tool to help reduce emissions from the freight transport sector. Despite high ambitions, policies for a modal shift in Europe have largely been unsuccessful. This presentation offers a comparison of mode choice elasticities examined in the context of Swedish maritime freight flows, demonstrating the inelasticity of Swedish maritime freight flows.
