Integrating transport step by step:From ticketing to interoperable mobility
The design of multimodal transport networks, intermodal mobility services, integrated trip planners, and other solutions are available in many forms, and promote transport integration from different perspectives of the transport ecosystem.
However, a real integration is only possible when other types of integration is achieved. Service integration can only occur when information, ticketing solutions, and service offerings are integrated. The concept of Mobility as a Service (MaaS) recognises that mobility services depend on more than an integrated transport infrastructure and operations.
During this hybrid seminar, we will discuss the integration of other aspects of mobility services that enable a seamless mobility experience by focusing on both technology and business aspects of integration, namely, ticketing, pricing, and first and last mile services.

Marta Campos Ferreira: "Seamless Travel: Payments as a Gateway to Interoperable Mobility" In an era of increasing urbanisation and multimodal transportation, payment systems play a pivotal role in fostering interoperability between transport operators. This presentation explores how user-centred payment solutions can serve as enablers of mobility, reducing barriers and enhancing accessibility for travellers. By addressing the adoption of mobile ticketing and open-loop payment systems, this talk showcases how these innovations streamline access to multimodal transportation networks, paving the way for seamless and inclusive mobility solutions. | ![]() Assistant Professor University of Porto, Portugal ![]() ![]() |
Fulvio Silvestri: "Mobility as a Service (MaaS) Bundles to improve Public Transport ridership and reduce car use" Building on advancements of web platforms and smart-apps for integrating travel planning, ticketing, and payment, this presentation delves into the potential of MaaS bundles including public transport and shared mobility services in the attempt to improve first/last-mile access to railway and metro stations, expanding their catchment areas, and making public transport more convenient and attractive. How appealing are these bundles to travellers, notably car users? What drives individuals’ interest and willingness to pay for MaaS bundles? | ![]() Research Fellow Politecnico di Milano, Italy ![]() |
