Bikesharing and public transport in central London: integration, complementation and substitution
By Jamie Ward, Winner of the Neil Mansfield Award for the best paper written by an author under the age of 35 at the European Transport Conference.
FREE Webinar: Thursday, 7 December 11.00-12.00 CET / 10.00-11.00 UTC
Docked bicycle sharing systems (‘bikesharing’) provide on-demand and low-cost access to a network of bicycles for point-to-point trips between strategically-located docking stations. Through multifaceted relationships with public transport (PT), bikesharing has the potential to improve urban sustainability by relieving PT capacity pressures and reducing car dependency. Focusing on the London bikesharing system, this presentation will explore how bikesharing demand relates to PT in three key ways:
Integration: where bikesharing supports a PT trip as a first/last-mile mode
Complementation: where bikesharing is used for journeys which are not viable by PT
Substitution: where bikesharing replaces or is chosen instead of a PT trip.
The presentation will especially focus on where bikesharing and public transport compete in terms of journey time and cost. This research will help inform the future development of bikesharing in relation to public transport, which is useful to promote sustainable mobility.
The FREE webinar is organised by the AET Transport and Mobility Forum and co-hosted by the Young Researchers' and Practitioners' Forum (YRPF). It will be chaired by Ajeni Ari, member of the TMF and member of the AET Council, and moderated by André Goncalves, Chair of the YRPF, from Sweco, Belgium.
The webinar will be hosted on the Zoom platform. For further registration details, please go to AET Transport and Mobility Forum and follow the link to register for the webinar.
